Before entering into the adult industry, more specifically mainstream porn, I was educated on sexual wellness in grade school. My school invited presenters from a sexual wellness company to do a week long seminar. During this seminar they stressed the importance of getting an STD test after sexual intercourse with a new partner. The school I attended took the time to educate us on that topic but that doesn’t mean that applies to every school in the nation, or even district. (Sexual education should be required in all schools, in my opinion, so that the adolescents can understand the basics and have a healthy outlook on sex as they mature.) According to the CDC, as of March of this year only 29 states and the District of Columbia require public schools teach sex education, 27 of which mandate sex education and HIV education.

After speaking to a few people I was shocked to learn that most do not get tested after having sex with a new partner, whether using protection or not. I find that irresponsible to some degree.

My (demographic less) poll on twitter will give you an idea of how people are navigating their sexual health.

As porn performers we’re required to test every 14 days (if actively working). Some sets require a 7 day test and rarely within 24-48 hours. Due to COVID-19 testing is a bit different. We’re now required to do our regular full panel STD test along with a 24-48 hour COVID-19 test. So in short, the likelihood of a “civilian” catching an STD from an adult performer is slim to none, if the adult performer is responsible. I don’t generalize. Not everyone will adhere to a moral code of conduct in the workplace like I do.

It’s up to you, as a reader, to maintain your sexual health. Maintaining your sexual health ultimately means you’re reducing the spread of STDs. This post is to urge everyone to know your status and get tested!
